Charity Visit to Rumah Charis

Rumah Charis is a welfare organization registered with the Registrar of Society (ROS) of Malaysia in Year 1993. It is a non-profit Christian based organization, was founded in 1988 by Reverend Teo How Ken as a home to serve the old and the aged. Since its inception more than 20 years ago, Rumah Charis had been offering social services that provide spiritual guidance, shelter, education and healthy community activities. The children home ministry provides care for orphans and single parent children. Their homes and activities aim to create a suitable environment to enable children to grow. They help to provide spiritual direction, education, and counseling for the children.

Charity should be considered as a form of education. The implementation of charity cultures into academic serves to act as a jumpstart for students to organize community projects voluntarily while enhancing their self-development. Hence, a group of volunteers from Culinology Club of Student Networking members and lecturers decided to turn our kindness thought into real action by visiting Rumah Charis orphanage home at Taman Yarl, Kuala Lumpur. The ultimate aim of this charity event was to promote compassionate by selfless giving to the need society among all participants. Beside that it was a golden bonding opportunity to tighten the relationship between each respective students and lecturers.

Our charity event included preparation of lunch meals for the orphans, collecting foods donations and organized a birthday party for the July & August children at the orphanage (31 July 2016). The engagement and interaction with the children was done through some ice-breaking activities & games. Looking at the kids happy faces when our volunteers played with them crazily, when the foods have been served to them & when the candles light up on top the birthday cake…we knew that our efforts paid off with their happiness. Indeed, we were the benefited society because the charity activity has helped us to improve sense of well-being by the act of helping others via sacrificed something such as time, finances or property in order to help others in need can give us a sense of purpose in life or work and inner satisfaction. In conclusion, we had a fruitful time spent in this charity event and hopefully the seed of compassion will keep growing and embark regardless when and where we go.
